DESCRIPTION:Exhibition from August 14 to November 18. \nOpening reception on Friday\, August 21\, at 11 a.m. \nIslands are like mirages. Not all of them are real\, and some are shrouded in legend. Of the seven islands officially listed on Lake Geneva—all of which are on the Swiss shore—none is truly natural. Most of the time\, they consist of two or three rocks protruding from the surface which\, through repeated landfills\, reinforcement\, and the construction of retaining walls\, eventually\nbecome small islets.    \nThere is a special spirit to islands. They are utopias that satisfy our need for escape and freedom.  \nOn closer inspection\, however\, other human-made structures built on the lake do indeed resemble real islands. \nWhether they float\, firmly anchored to the bottom\, serving as welcome resting places for birds\, or rest on a very stable substrate. \nThere is a special spirit to islands. While some were built for practical reasons—to protect a harbor\, for example—others are the product of dreams and fantasies. In their own way\, they\nare utopias that\, paradoxically\, feed our need for escape and freedom.
