SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: Science\, knowledge and mysteries of the animal body with Virginie Jean
DESCRIPTION:What if certain practices escaped the all-too-simple categories of “science” or “superstition”? \nWhat if\, between technical gesture and intuition\, between accumulated experience and mystery\, there were another way of inhabiting the world? \nAs part of the Festival Histoire et Cité\, whose theme for 2026 is “Comme par magie” (As by magic)\, Philo aux Bains is delighted to welcome Virginie Jean\, cow whisperer. \nIn contrast to a strictly technical vision of animal care\, his work is part of an ancient tradition: that of the “rebouteux” and “rebouteuses”\, who\, through touch\, close observation\, listening to the body and empirical knowledge often transmitted outside academic frameworks\, relieve\, heal and rebalance. \nIs it folk knowledge? An art of gesture? A form of magic? \nWhat does it mean to “care” when you’re working with living beings\, in close proximity to the body? \nHow can we think about these practices in a world dominated by scientific veterinary medicine? Opposition\, complementarity\, cohabitation? \nThis meeting will be an opportunity to explore the tensions – but also the possible dialogues – between rationality and belief\, tradition and modernity\, the visible and the invisible. \nIn the course of the discussion\, we’ll also question our contemporary relationship with living things: what does caring for animals say about our way of being in the world? What is legitimate knowledge? Who decides what’s science and what’s folklore? \nThe meeting will take place at the Bains des Pâquis\, on the pier\, under the yurt. Free admission.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: How to respond to the violence of capitalism? with Nicolas Framont
DESCRIPTION:How do we respond to the violence of capitalism? And what happens when this violence is no longer merely structural\, but provokes irreversible action? \nFor this Philo aux Bains event\, we welcome Nicolas Framont\, sociologist and editor-in-chief of Frustration magazine\, for a discussion based on two of his books: Parasites and Saint-Luigi: comment répondre à la violence du capitalisme. \nIn Parasites\, Nicolas Framont dismantles a well-honed ideological mechanism: that of designating certain populations as “welfare recipients”\, “profiteers” or “burdens” on society. Against this rhetoric\, he asks a simple\, incisive question: who is really living off whom? Through a sociological and political analysis\, he shows how the accusation of parasitism serves to mask the true relations of exploitation and protect the interests of the dominant classes. \nWith Saint-Luigi\, he takes a different approach\, more directly rooted in a tragic news item: the murder of Brian Thomson by Luigi Mangione. Based on this event\, Nicolas Framont proposes a reflection on political and social violence. What does such an act say about the times in which we live? How can we understand how an individual could commit such an irreparable act in the name of denouncing capitalism? And above all: how can we respond to systemic violence without tipping ourselves into a logic of destruction? \nAs always at Philo aux Bains\, this meeting is intended as a space for collective reflection\, taking the time to consider the tensions of our times – and the possible paths towards greater justice. \nThe meeting takes place as part of the FIFDH. \nUnder the yurt\, free admission.

SUMMARY:Concert: Aï Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Agnès sings and saws\, Françoise plays accordion\, Jean-Elie plays electric guitar and banjo\, and Dom plays baritone saxophone. This group is in fact a “side project” of Les Canards des Cropettes\, since we’re all part of it! Our repertoire is made up of covers from the last century\, from “Nessuno” to “Canzione Arrabiata”\, including “Sous aucun prétexte”\, “Perfect Day” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”. The result is a nostalgic flavour that has been brought up to date\, and the joy of revisiting these songs and playing them together. \nConcert under the yurt\, free admission.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: Artificial intelligence\, knowledge and society with Monsieur Phi
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing our relationship with knowledge\, work and machines. Between fascinating promises and legitimate fears\, it is redefining the way we apprehend the world\, thought and even our own humanity. Are we witnessing a cognitive revolution? Can AI really think\, understand or know? And what impact will these advances have on society and our daily lives? \nIn the company of Mr. Phi\, a well-known philosopher\, Youtuber and popularizer\, we’ll be looking at the major challenges of AI\, in relation to knowledge\, robotization and our relationship with machines. What place does the human being still have in the face of ever more powerful systems? What does it mean to “understand” in a world where algorithms produce knowledge without any real consciousness? And how far can we automate decisions without losing control? \nA fascinating exchange that will lead us to question the philosophical\, ethical and political implications of a future where intelligence may no longer be exclusively human. \nThe café-philo will take place at the Bains des Pâquis\, on the pier\, under the yurt\, and will be broadcast live on Facebook and available to stream on YouTube. Free admission.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: What it means to animalize with Kaoutar Harchi
DESCRIPTION:What makes us human? Why and how have we established a boundary with the animal? And what does this separation reveal about our societies\, our hierarchies and our violence? \nIn Ainsi l’animal et nous\, sociologist and writer Kaoutar Harchi examines how we have constructed the figure of the animal as an inferior\, exploitable\, killable being – and how this same logic has served\, throughout history\, to justify the exclusion and domination of certain human groups: women\, racial minorities\, the working classes. For if we animalize animals\, we have also animalized certain humans\, the better to relegate them to the margins of the moral community. \nPart theoretical analysis\, part intimate reflection\, Kaoutar Harchi’s book invites us to rethink our relationship with animality and violence\, and to envisage new forms of justice and coexistence. \nThis meeting\, organized as part of the Histoire et Cité festival in collaboration with Les Indépendantes\, will be an opportunity to explore these crucial questions with the author\, in relation to history\, philosophy and contemporary social struggles. \nThe discussion will take place at the Bains des Pâquis\, on the pier\, under the yurt\, and will be broadcast live on Facebook and available for replay on YouTube. Free admission.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: Degrowth\, a myth? with Timothée Parrique
DESCRIPTION:What if the idea of infinite growth was just a myth? What if our societies could prosper while respecting the planet’s limits? Degrowth\, often misunderstood\, suggests another way forward\, that of refocusing on the essentials\, solidarity and simplicity. What does “living better with less” really mean? What changes does it imply for our lifestyles\, our values and our economy?\n \nTo explore these questions\, we are honored to welcome Timothée Parrique\, economist and leading author on degrowth\, to the FIFDH. His seminal work\, Ralentir ou périr : L’économie de la décroissance\, questions our obsession with GDP and calls for a profound transformation of our relationship with consumption\, work and nature. \n“Degrowth is not recession\, but an invitation to rethink what makes a successful life and a sustainable society.” (Timothée Parrique) \nThe café-philo will take place at the Bains des Pâquis\, on the pier\, under the yurt\, and will be broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube. Free admission.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: The environmental cost of happiness with Gaël Brulé
DESCRIPTION:In a world where consumption is often synonymous with well-being\, what are the environmental consequences of our choices? And above all\, is it possible to redefine happiness in a more sober\, planet-friendly way? In his book Le coût environnemental du bonheur\, sociologist and researcher Gaël Brulé explores the links between our individual aspirations and their ecological impact. Combining philosophical reflection and sociological analysis\, he suggests ways of rethinking happiness in the light of environmental challenges. In this café-philo\, we’ll discuss some key questions: is our definition of happiness compatible with a world of limited resources? How can modern societies evolve towards sustainable models of well-being? And what concrete solutions can be implemented to reduce the environmental cost of our quest for happiness? Trained as an engineer\, Gaël Brulé is a sociologist and professor of environmental health at the University of Applied Sciences in Geneva. He has worked in sociology on happiness. His research focuses on the links between well-being and social\, institutional and ecosystem conditions. He is co-founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Sciences & Bonheur. The café-philo will take place at the Bains des Pâquis\, on the pier under the yurt\, and will be broadcast live on Facebook and recorded on YouTube. \n Free admission.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: Café mortel
DESCRIPTION:Philo aux Bains invites you to join us in the Yurt on the pier for a Café mortel\, where you can share your experiences of death in a convivial atmosphere.\n\nThe brainchild of Bernard Crettaz\, sociologist\, founder of the Société d’études thanatologiques and fervent Christian\, who wanted people to “talk about death in the bistro”\, these Cafés were created to free up discussion about death and dislodge the strongest taboos.\nToday\, Rita Bonvin is one of the people who have taken up the torch with the association Envie de dire la mort and who is perpetuating these special exchange spaces\, whose objective is: “living orality”\, i.e. an exchange in the presence of others that invites encounters – “civic orality”\, which concerns everyone – “non-specialized orality”\, which recognizes experience\, lived experience. In this sense\, to encourage non-judgmental exchanges between full-fledged human beings\, we ask you to express yourself without “professional posture (…) without theory (…) or therapy”. \nThe anthropologist’s latest work will be available on site thanks to the collaboration of Labor et Fides\, who have republished it and whom we thank for their participation.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: Humanitarianism\, a surge of solidarity or a field of contradictions?
DESCRIPTION:Does humanitarian aid create more dependency than it solves problems? Are the motivations of humanitarian actors always as altruistic as we think? How can we prevent humanitarian aid from becoming a vehicle for neo-colonialism? Come and discuss this fascinating topic at our next café-philo with Tawfik Chamaa. Together\, we’ll explore the profound motivations behind humanitarian commitment\, as well as its paradoxes and sometimes unexpected consequences: dependence\, new colonialism\, good intentions that backfire… This café-philo is an invitation to reflect on the ethical challenges of international aid\, through questions that concern us all. Come and share your ideas\, thoughts and doubts in a convivial atmosphere open to dialogue. Dr. Chamaa is currently Director of the Service Medical Junction (multidisciplinary medical group) which he founded in 1997 and which serves a large number of people in the center of Geneva. In September 2011\, following the Syrian uprising\, he co-created the Geneva-based association Syrian Democrats (DS) to support Syrians in their demand for democracy and freedom. He is also a board member of UOSSM International\, HRI and President of GLOCA (Global Organisation for Civil Society Advancement _ Shabab Pro project). The café-philo is organized as part of the Cataracte exhibition\, and will take place under the yurt on the Bains pier. \n Free admission.

SUMMARY:Philo aux Bains: birth\, what does it change?
DESCRIPTION:“We arrive in the midst of a conversation begun before us”\, wrote Ricoeur\, whose pupil and friend Olivier Abel was. Birth throws us both into history and into the vagaries of chance. The splendor of incarnation\, which presents the newborn with the possibility of playing his or her own part\, sometimes turns into the anguish of incarceration\, of being trapped within oneself and doomed to death. But the desolation of our finitude finds consolation in the marvel of the plurality of existences and forms of life. Each of us is obliged to be born\, and through our existence transforms raw chance into consented chance. \n\n\n\nBy making birth the perpetually renewed root of democracy\, Olivier Abel offers us a superb existential and political meditation in which every birth changes something\, not only for oneself (obviously!) but also for the world. \n\n\nIn the company of Olivier Abel\, professor of philosophy and ethics at the Protestant theology faculty in Montpellier\, and author of “La Naissance\, qu’est ce que ça change?”\, we’ll take a closer look at the term to understand its meanings\, uses and imaginations.\n\nFollowing the approach of the Qu’est ce que ça change? collection\, which invites us to reflect freely on a vast subject that concerns us all\, the idea is to share the philosopher’s viewpoint and to explore together what this notion evokes.\n\nIn collaboration with Labor et Fides Philo aux Bains invites you to question a simple yet complex notion: birth.

SUMMARY:How is sign language developing in Geneva?
DESCRIPTION:As part of the “Portraits parlés” exhibition at Les Bains\, this café-philo will look at the daily lives of deaf people in an attempt to better understand this too-often ostracized community\, opening up dialogue and exchange between hearing and deaf people. In particular\, we’ll be looking at the many developments in sign language in Geneva as necessary adaptations and social\, cultural and linguistic responses to hearing loss. \nGuests: \nFrédérik is a deaf artist\, painter\, illustrator and cartoonist. Born in 1974\, he lives in Geneva. He began drawing at the age of 5 and has never let go of his pencil. In 1995\, he obtained his diploma in theater design. RTS and the press entrusted him with several mandates as a storyteller and cartoonist. Since 2008\, her project on the History of the Deaf has occupied her full time; created in the form of large-scale gouache paintings using a unique pictorial technique\, they represent emblematic figures\, an era\, a theme\, linked to deafness. These paintings\, which have already attracted a great deal of public attention at exhibitions\, are full of powerful symbolism and colorful imagery\, and tell us the story of the Deaf\, their history and their future.\ninner world. \nJaime Barria is a Geneva-based hip-hop artist and blogger of Chilean and Colombian origin. Passionate about events\, he excels as an entrepreneur and also organizes philosophical cafés. At the University of Geneva\, her research focused on Geneva’s deaf population\, with the aim of creating a guided tour highlighting their history\, culture and arts. In particular\, he has explored the RTS program “Signes” and the translation of the Bible into LSF. The visit ended at the VROOM restaurant\, and provided an opportunity to discover the richness of Geneva’s deaf culture. \nThe café-philo will take place under the yurt. Free admission
