Islands are like mirages. Not all of them are real, and some are shrouded in legend. Of the seven islands officially listed on Lake Geneva—all of which are on the Swiss shore—none is truly natural. Most of the time, they consist of two or three rocks protruding from the surface which, through repeated landfills, reinforcement, and the construction of retaining walls, eventually
become small islets.

There is a special spirit to islands. They are utopias that satisfy our need for escape and freedom.

On closer inspection, however, other human-made structures built on the lake do indeed resemble real islands.

Whether they float, firmly anchored to the bottom, serving as welcome resting places for birds, or rest on a very stable substrate.

There is a special spirit to islands. While some were built for practical reasons—to protect a harbor, for example—others are the product of dreams and fantasies. In their own way, they
are utopias that, paradoxically, feed our need for escape and freedom.
